Nearing the end of the Edo Period, Ii Naosuke anguished over the decision to open the long closed country of Japan… a decision that would determine the very fate of Japan. This year commemorates the 200th year of the birth of Ii Naosuke. To celebrate this great event, over the course of 167 days, from July 10th to December 23rd we will be holding an open exhibition, “The 200th Year Celebration of the Birth of Lord Ii Naosuke”.
During this time, not only will we exhibit our fascination with him as the venerated politician… but also in his charm as a master of both the tea ceremony and waka poetry writing, among his other talents… which will be on special exhibition within Hikone Castle and the Hikone Castle Museum. These and several other unique events will be held throughout the city for all to enjoy.
